Players take the role of rich merchants based in Palmyra (also known as Tadmor), a vital stop for caravans crossing the Syrian Desert. They will increase in power and prestige by expanding their trading routes to collect resources and fetch rare goods as well as by contributing to the political and religious life of the city.

Improvements representing trading and diplomatic skills, technologies and political influence increase the value of the actions available during the game, while Marauders try to intercept caravans and ships to plunder their valuable cargo. The winning merchant is the one who has scored the most prestige points at the end of the game.
